By Senator Chuck Hagel, R-NE
We have misunderstood, misread, misplanned and mismanaged our honorable intentions in Iraq with an arrogant self-delusion reminiscent of Vietnam.
Glad to see the Republicans finally face reality. Although it sounds kind of hollow now that they're no longer in power.

Sad Statistic
Today marks a grim statistic: more American soldiers have died in Iraq than people killed in the 9/11 attacks. As of today, 2980 American soldiers have been killed in the second-deadliest month for Americans in Iraq in over a year, and it's not over yet.
My condolences go out to the families of the fallen this holiday season.

By Sen. Orrin Hatch
Saturday, February 18:
And, more importantly, we've stopped a mass murderer in Saddam Hussein. Nobody denies that he was supporting al-Qaida... Well, I shouldn't say nobody. Nobody with brains.
SaturdayWednesday, February 22:
Saddam clearly had a long history of supporting terrorists, but I was not talking about any formal link between Saddam and al-Qaida before the war... Instead, I pointed out that the current insurgency in Iraq includes al-Qaida, under the leadership of al-Zarqawi, along with former elements of Saddam's regime.

WMD Not Moved To Syria
An addendum to the Duelfer Report states WMD were not moved to Syria.
Six months after reporting that Saddam Hussein did not have stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons prior to the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, inspector Charles Duelfer has issued an addendum to that report, in which he also dismisses claims that weapons of mass destruction were quietly transferred to Syria before the attack.
In related news, things have not been looking good for Blair since the leaking of a legal document warning him the war in Iraq may be illegal.

Congratulations
Congratulations to the Iraqi people on their first free election in 50 years. As much as I disagree with the war being fought there, I'm glad to hear the election went off relatively well. I hope the future is brighter for Iraqis.

Search For WMD Over
Yes, the Bush Administration has abandoned its search for WMD in Iraq.
The Seattle P-I has a good contrast of Bush Administration statements before and after the war with respect to the non-existent weapons.

Look At The Liberators
I don't know what's worse, the torture of Iraqis by Americans at Abu Ghraib prison, or the justifications used by the soldier's defense attorney.
Thank goodness Saddam is gone so he can't torture any more of his people. I mean, why should he get all the fun?
Update: For those of you who have seen the photos and think the abuse "wasn't that bad", take a look at some of the victims' testimonies (registration required). It includes beatings, threats to rape their wives, forcing them to eat pork and to make statements against their Muslim faith. Remember that not all these prisoners were insurgents; one was imprisoned for stealing a car.
Sorry, but shit like this really makes me sick.

Bush's Biggest Fan
Whoever said Bush didn't have support from other countries, obviously hadn't talked to Hasan Rowhani, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
Rowhani prefers Bush because he got rid of Saddam, a long-time enemy of Iran, and because "Democrats usually insist on human rights and they will have more excuses to pressure Iran."
I wonder if that should be part of the Republicans' new slogan: Democrats usually insist on human rights. Vote for Bush!

Reasons For War
Today, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld publicly admitted there was no evidence of a link between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda. Interesting considering this was one of the main reasons for the invasion. In case you don't remember, let's recap those reasons (italics are my comments):
- Saddam's unproven link to terrorists.
- Weapons of Mass Destructions that haven't been found.
- Liberation of the Iraqi people. Makes you wonder why Iraq topped the list, considering the genocide in the Sudan.
- Saddam was a terrible dictator who gassed his own people. While to US did nothing about it until 10 years later.
- Bringing democracy to the Middle East. Because we all saw how all the Arab nations fell in line after a democratic Israel was established.
- America's right to preemptively attack a perceived enemy. Too bad the US is the only country allowed to do this.
Yup, sounds like good reasons to invade a country. Let me know if I forgot anything.

They Probably Deserved It
On Friday I was talking to a few coworkers about the 60 Minutes special on the Iraqi prisoners who were abused by US Army personel. One of the guys I was talking to commented on how the prisoners "probably deserved it", and that the torture didn't seem all that bad.
I really wish the guy who said that was the first American I met with this kind of attitude. Unfortunately, he's not.

Skeletons In The Closet
Wanna know how George W knows Saddam developed weapons of mass destruction all the while committing wanton human rights abuses?
Easy, the US (and the rest of the Western world, for that matter) helped him out! I wonder if Bush wants the Iraqis to try, and ultimately execute Saddam, just so he doesn't talk?

Tragic Statistic
On Saturday, two Black Hawk helicopters crashed in Iraq, killing 17 American soldiers. Those fatalities mark a morbid milestone: more than twice the number of American soldiers have been killed since President Bush declared combat over, than died during the actual war.
Bring 'em on, indeed.

Our Fearless Leader
Today is also the day President Bush is going to give his big speech, justifying a war with Iraq. At least our brave and respected Prime Minister has finally taken a position, and decided not to send Canadian troops to Iraq. At least he's finally taken a stand, and no longer sitting on that high pointy fence, with our largest trading partner on one side, and a league of nations on the other (which, by the way, was formed to prevent countries from unilaterally invading and changing regimes in other countries).
So hooray for Chrétien for making a decision! I love him now more than ever.
By the way, I'm aware of the irony of blogging about the war, even though I said yesterday that I wouldn't, so don't bother pointing that out. I'm a liar as well as an opinionated boor.
